AFP

Many meanings can be attributed to the term AFP, as it is quite a versatile term. With the change in the perspective the meaning of the term also changes and it is quite possible that within a same perspective, the term can mean two or more different things. The first meaning that can be attached to the term AFP in the networking world is, AppleTalk Filing Protocol. This AFP when taken in this context is a client or server sharing protocol used in the AppleTalk network, which enables the sharing of certain news, documents and other important stuff. This protocol is strictly used for the sharing of material therefore, even if a non-apple network needs to access the data from the AppleShare file server then to do this it has to convert the data in to AFP language. AFP over the TCP/IP protocol allows the clients or the servers to access the data over the TCP/IP networks.

The second meaning attached to this term in the networking world is, Advanced Function Presentation, which is IBM’s platform published standard in the printing world, which define the standards for the printing of data at very high speeds with complete integrity. The AFP has be designed keeping in mind all the formats of the documents that needs to be printed, like the AFP incorporates the industry formats, including the XML, DOCX, PPML, PCL, XSL, PDF, BMP, JPEG etc and many more. In addition to all this the AFP also has the capability to print on the standard printing devices that is used in the market and along with that deliver or send the material or content via HTML or fax or email, without any problem.
