Application (Application Software)

Application is basically a program or a group of group that has been designed and released for end user use. Applications allow a user to do one or more than one specific task, for example, some of the end user applications are office suite, accounting software, enterprise software, media player and graphic software etc. all of these application are specific, that is, they perform a certain task, like office is used by the user to make documents and write them, edit them and view them, the graphic application is used by the graphic designers to make ads or some other things.

It is due to this reason that the Application software can be divided in to two general classes, which are system software and applications software. The System Software are those application that needed to run the system, for example, Operating system is also an application, however, it is needed to run the system, and this application is not specific, that is, it can perform certain different roles. This system software consists of low – level programs that interact with the computer at the very basic level.  Apart from Operating system, some other examples of such software are compilers, utilities etc.

On the other hand there is application software, which include database programs, word processors and spread sheets, as mentioned above, these are those applications or software which are made to do some specific job, for example to build a data sheet one need to use the spread sheet, he cannot make that on the word documents. It should be noted that this application software is quite different thing than the system software, as these application software cannot run the system by them self, in fact, these application software sit or use the system software as the base to run.
