Data Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs)
When the data is being transferred from one destination to another there is always a possibility of the data loss or data might be corrupted when it reaches to the destination. In order to ensure that there is no error in the data there should be some mechanism to check this. It can be done using the virtual circuits of Data Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs). It consist of10-bit number that is placed in the header of a frame that is responsible for the file transfer. DLCI numbers are issued by the service provider and uniquely identify a virtual circuit. These 10 bit numbers are provided by the service provider and are of the local scope.
If you want to keep your data error free and for that purpose you have taken two DLCI numbers from the provider. What if both the numbers are same? It causes no harm because these are just to ensure the integrity of the data. The header file that contains the DLCI is translated at every point on the network. In this way the the header file number is only significant at the state of local users scope. It is also possible that the DLCI numbers can have the global recognition numbers. These are also given by the service provider.
When it comes to the global header file than each user can be identified individually and in this way the frame relay network becomes easy to be managed for problems. A problem occurs because the 10 bit headers file number have the limit of combinations up to 1024. In this there are some combinations selected for the management purpose. So its range is a problem for giving every individual a separate number. A solution to this problem is under consideration and will be released soon.
