DCE

DCE might be just one word, still it is an acronym for various things, or products, depending upon the context it is used in and the place it is used in, for example in the networking world it means something entirely different as compared to the meaning seen in other perspectives. This article will however deal with the networking world and the meaning of DCE with reference to this world. In the networking world DCE is can mean two things which are discussed in the following material.

The first meaning that can be attributed to DCE is that it is an acronym for Distributed Computing Environment. DCE is basically software that was developed in the year 1990s by a consortium. DCE is software as mentioned above, however, along with that it is a suite of technology services for creating distributed applications that run on different platforms. There are a number of services that are included in the DCE suite of technology. They are RPC or more commonly known as remote procedure calls, security service, directory service, time service, threads service and distributed file service. Due to the variety of these services and robust security system DCE is one of the most recommended and popular choice for very large systems and corporation which require all of these services that DCE has to offer to perform their functions.

Second meaning that can be attributed to the DCE is Data Communications Equipment. Data communication equipment as the name states is basically a device that communicates with data terminal equipment or DTE device in the RS-232C communications. The most common example of this is a router which is present in the network and enables one part of the network to communicate with the other part of the network and sometimes with another network as well.
