Dsl Modems

DSL stands for the Digital Subscriber Line modem which is device used to connect a PC to a telephone circuit that has DSL service configured through a router. To make it simple it is a type of modem used to connect to the internet. DSL modems are capable of providing a very fast internet access as they are specifically designed for the use of high speed DSL connections. DSL connections are way faster than the dial up connections which are considered obsolete these days and unlike the dial up a user can use the phone and the internet on the same time i.e. both can be used simultaneously.

Sometimes DSL is also known as the ADSL (Asymmetric DSL) modem which provides similar features like those of the dial up modem except for greater speed. Even if they are similar in services they have some major differences in technologies and setup.

A DSL modem is usually outside the PC i.e. it is an external unit and is connected to the computer through the Ethernet or USB. The DSL is capable enough to work with both USB and Ethernet port but it is recommended that you should use an Ethernet port. An Ethernet DSL modem can be fixed in both conditions either the user has a single computer or a network of them.

A router is used to allow more than one PCs to have an internet access on the same connection and for this the router should be capable of NAT (Network Address Translation). Whereas USB modems don not support routers and can be used by a single computer at a time.

Today the DSL modems are very common and many companies are providing the DSL services and for them they provide the DSL modem to the customers, free of charge
