eBGP

The term BGP stands for border gateway protocol and the term eBGP stands for external border gateway protocol. This article basically deals with the external border gateway protocol, however, along with that this article also explains the BGP and that what is it. BGP is a protocol that is extensively used in the routing of data in the network via different routers and other networking devices that are present and operating in the network. This border gateway protocol is extensively used at the edge of the autonomous system or AS.

The main feature of this protocol which enables it to route the information around the network, is that, this protocol keeps a track or record of the IP’s of the different device present in the autonomous system, which allows it to easily and quickly locate the destination or an appropriate device, thus enabling it to route data efficiently. However, this should be kept in mind that the BGP itself is not responsible or performs a role of transporting the data from the source to the destination. It is the job of the transporting protocol. The BGP was released as a replacement to the old EGP or Exterior Gateway Protocol, which also performed the job of routing the data in the network. There are two different types of BGP, interior Border Gateway Protocol and exterior Border Gateway Protocol. The following material will however only deal with the exterior border gateway protocol or eBGP.

The eBGP or exterior border gateway protocol is used in the networking world for the transportation of the information from one BGP enabled system to another BGP enabled systems, which are present in the different AS or autonomous system. In short the exterior BGP works totally opposite to the interior BGP as iBGP is used to transport the information within the same AS or autonomous system.
