Hardware used for setting up home based wireless network
First of all there are routers which are hardware equipment used for connecting many wired/wireless networks to each other. It is a layer 3 gateway; hence it works at the network level of the OSI model.
Home networks often use IP routers (which can be wired or wireless), this is because IP is the most popular OSI network level protocol. Thus DSL or cable modem broadband routers are used to connect the LAN to the internet WAN.
Second there are wireless access points (APs or WAPs) which are points on wireless local area networks (WLANs). They behave as central senders and receivers of WLAM signals.
Home access point usually are small devices which include an internal network adapter, antenna and radio transmitter, they support Wi-Fi wireless communication standards.
Next there are wireless network adapters; these are card shaped devices that connect to computers PCI bus which is located inside the unit, thus the card needs to be installed inside the computer unit. Basically wireless network adapters enable devices to communicate with each other over WiFi or other wireless networking protocols.
These are the basic hardware components that you can choose from to setup a network. Additionally, you can also use a wireless Internet video camera which captures data (video and audio) and transmits it across a Wi-Fi computer network.
