NCP

The term NCP can refer to many different things, depending upon the perspective it is used in, however, this article will deal with this world, with reference to the world of technology or more specifically, the networking world. In the networking world the term NCP stands for Netware Core Protocol. Netware core Protocol or NCP is the principal protocol, used by the NetWare server and the NetWare client to share different files on the NetWare network.

NCP was created to deal with the file accessing request and many other requests like printing, copying, editing etc that are sent by the clients to the NCP server. This NCP is usually associated with the NetWare operating system; however, some implementations of this technology on the XP, Linux and various flavors of UNIX are also seen in the world.

The underlying technology, on which the NCP is able to send or receive messages, is made up of IPX and TCP/IP. In case of the TCP/IP implementation, it used the TCP/UDP port 524 for the message transfer capability and it relies on SLP for the name resolution. The Novel NetWare network is basically made up of NCP client and server LAN. The way this network works is that, the information or NCP requests are created by the workstations which are then sent over the network with the help of the IPX and the TCP/IP technology used to the NCP server.

Once it reaches the NCP server, then the requests are unpacked and interpreted, after which the NCP server reacts according to what it calculates to be the best solution. As mentioned before NCP was made to deal with several types of file requests and different services, the following material name some of the services that the NCP has to offer. NCP offers file locking, file sharing, file printing, file accessing, file security, tracking of resource allocation, event notification, synchronization with other servers, queue management, network management and connection and communications services.
