Operating System
Operating System or more commonly known as OS is one of the most important parts of the computer. Without an OS or an operating system the computer would fail to work and bring about any kind of function or action that the user demands from it. Operating system itself is basically a program, not some special hardware tool etc, however, it is one of the most important program without which the computer cannot work. The main role of the program is that it provides a base to the user to install and use other different software and programs. There are various operating systems present in the market today and being used all around the world. Some of them are Linux, Red hat, MAC OS, windows 2002, windows XP, windows 98, windows 7, windows vista etc. All of these are the operating systems that are installed on the computer to make it functional.
Basically the OS perform quite simple basic tasks like recognizing the input from the input devices like keyboard, mouse, joystick and sending output to the display screen. Apart from this it keeps track of all the files and the directories present in the computer so that the user can access them whenever he wants to. Apart from all this the operating system is also used to control the peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. These were the basic functions that the OS performed in homes, when talking about large companies and multi-national businesses then there the OS have to do certain other major tasks as well.
There are several types of Operating Systems. They are mentioned in the following material. They are multi-user, allowing more than two user to access and use the same program, multiprocessing, multitasking, multithreading and real time, in which the OS responds instantly to the input made by the user.
