Protocol Independent Multicast

PIM is the short for this term which is multicast routing protocol which runs on the existing unicast infrastructure.

PIM has two variations which are mentioned hereunder.

PIM-DM, short of PIM-Dense Mode. It is used when the targeted recipients are located in a concentrated area.

PIM-SM, short of PIM-Sparse Mode. It is used when recipients are located over a large area.
