Router

A router is one of the most important devices present in the network. It is widely used in the offices and often sometimes in homes. A router basically is a device that forwards the data packets that it receives across the computer network. For a router to function it is connected to at least two different network, so that it receives the information from one network and forward that data to the other network. On the internet these router perform another job as well, that is they do the job of traffic directing for the data, so that the person or the client that specifically asked for that data can get it, otherwise, without the help of the router, it is quite possible that the person who tries to search up some stuff on the internet might never be able to find the relevant information as a result of this search.

The way the router works in transferring the data is that when a data or information comes to the router, it has a header attached to it which have the address of the source and the destination. The router reads the destination address and sends of the data in the direction of that address thus ensuring that the information reaches its correct destination.

There are several types of router present in the market. The most common type are the ones that are used in homes and small offices, which are capable of performing simple functions only. Apart from them there are other, more sophisticated types of routers as well that range from the enterprise routers to the powerful core routers. The main function of the router is the transfer of the data packets, however, as the router becomes powerful, the speed and the security of the transferred data also increases and this is the only difference that is seen in the different routers.
