SDLC
The term SDLC is a versatile term as it has many meaning attached to it, all of which vary with reference to the context it is explained in. This article will however only deal with this term with reference to the networking world. The term SDLC is an acronym for three different things even in the networking world, and this article will deal with all three of these things.
Firstly SDLC is an acronym for synchronous data link control, which is basically a communication protocol based on the standards of IEEE and designed and introduced by the IBM. This protocol is extensively used by the IBM in their SNA or System network Architecture, networks. This SDLC is quite similar to the HDLC, which is an IOS standard.
Secondly the term SDLC is an acronym for Software Development Life Cycle. It is also synonymous with the terms software engineering and software process. SDLC in this sense is a structured and defined method that is used in the manufacture and development of the different software products and packages, that are used in different places in the world, like organizations, homes etc. The methodology is used from the first phase where the concepts and the thought process for the making of the software begins to the end of the life of the software, that is, this methodology covers the whole life of the software from its production till its end.
Thirdly, the term SDLC is acronym for System Development Life Cycle. When talking in this sense; SDLC is the process where the information systems are developed through the succession of five states. These states are investigation, analysis, design, implementation and maintenance. Due to this reason SDLC in this perspective is also known by the world as systems development or application development, as after the five stages are complete, something new is made.
