What Is Jitter buffer

When internet telephony is being used for voice communication then sometimes problems also come in the links that can result as bad quality of sound or total loss of sound signals. Even if the service is very good and there is no such problem still there is a need of such a mechanism that should be used between the two endpoints to collect and queue all the signals that are distributed into small data sets. Jitter buffer is that system that is used as a container that collects all the voice signals in a certain pattern so that they can be assembled and then transmitted to the user for communication. This whole duration is so small so this jitter buffer has to be very efficient as it has to collect all the voice signals from the other end and rearrange them into the correct order and transmit them. It also removes the hold-up between the two back to back signals.

It consists of two parts one is hardware part and other is a software part. Both of these have their own importance as the hardware component is like a temporary storage place for the signals to wait for their turn so that they can be transmitted and the software part is responsible for the arrangement of every component of the signals by keeping some identity like assigning an address to every part. Both of these components matter a lot in the transmission voice signals and if one of them is not working correctly then the complete system will collapse and the voice communication will end. The communication media also matters a lot for a perfect communication because if there are many delays then the jitter buffer will be overloaded with the delay duration and the original signal may be lost.
