What Is LAN Telephony

LAN telephony or Local Area network Telephony is a phenomenon in which the network of computers that is installed in a particular place and all of them are using a single communication medium to communicate data with each other. This network is called a local area network and it can also be used as voice sending and receiving medium. Voice is sent over the communication medium in the form of encoded signals and is decoded at the destination back into voice that is understandable to human beings. In this way the same network that is being used for the exchange of information can also be used as a mechanism of voice conversation without paying any special charges for it.

This voice conversation is carried out by using a digital phone that is compatible to the internet line or it can also be done on a computer system using the necessary hardware components for a voice conversation. This is becoming very common and widely used in the places where LAN setups are already in use. LAN telephony can be established easily by using some software utilities that are easily available in the market. Talking about the hardware involved in this setup are the telephone sets that can be used either analog or digital. If you are using analog phones then you have to attach another component that converts the analog signals to digital signals so similarly to convert the received digital signals to analog signals.

This voice communication has not extra charges and if there are any then they are very less as compared to the conventional telephone system. Voice quality and the connection time is similar to phone and the service is better as internet service goes out very less and needs less maintenance then the phone line.
