Establish Connectivity Between Two Computers

• Buy a wireless adapter for each computer. (Laptops will often have an adapter built-in) good options are (PCI adapters or USB adapters). Purchase a wireless router for the network. This is good because it simplifies the setup of the network and extends the possible distance between two computers.

• Install the wireless adapters(instructions come with the device) and configure each adapter to use the same SSID , wireless channel and password or key for wireless encryption.

• Without a router you should set the adapter to work in ‘ad hoc’ mode. Using a router set adapters to work in infrastructure mode.

• Configure the router if you are using it. Connect a computer to the router using an Ethernet cable. Follow the instructions and go to the configuration page using the web browser (IP is in the manual), put in default username and password (in the manual). Set  the router to use the same SSID, channel and encryption password or key as the wireless adapters. You can assign static IP addresses, put up a firewall and there are many other feature that a router boasts. Then remove the Ethernet cable and connect to the router wirelessly. You then have to connect the router to the internet modem using the WAN port.

• If you are using an ad hoc network, internet sharing can be enabled for both computers. A router is capable of handling internet sharing.

• All you have to do now is verify if both computers can access internet, and try to transfer files to see if file sharing has been enabled.
