How to Choose a Wireless Card

There are lots of user friendly devices out there. This article will guide you through how you can buy an affordable and effective wireless card.

  • Firstly if your computer lacks a PCMCIA card slot, you cant use a wireless card, you can instead look for plug and play USB devices.
  • 802.11g is the latest standard, so make sure that whatever you get is at least compliant to this. Most new technologies will work with old standards though.
  • Try to get a wireless card with at least 128-bet WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) data encryption security, this will ensure your privacy at home. In public places you cannot use it though.
  • Check your purchase thoroughly to see if all manuals and installation Cds instructions come with it. They can be downloaded from the company website but it is your investment so try to get the most out of it. Pick a device which is Wi-Fi certifiedso you will be able to have your laptop’s wireless card  pick up Wi-Fi signals or "hotspots.
  • Try to search for the best prices. Search online and visit blogs and forums, after all it is your investment!
