How To Find Wireless Products To Setup A Network At Home

Wireless networks are very popular because of their mobility and ease. To setup a properly working wireless network requires compatible devices, which take some effort to find.

  • First of all you need to compile a list of the things you require to setup your network. Typically these items include; wireless routers, wireless adapters and nodes, switches or hubs, hotspot devices, wireless LAN cards for desktops and laptops, antennas, amplifiers, firewalls, wireless bridges and cables.
  • Some popular wireless network technologies widely used are; 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g
  • The best way to gain information on wireless technologies is by browsing through blogs and online discussion forums. Here you will be able to get reviews of devices and comparisons on price. These forums usually have discussions on how to setup such networks as well. You will be able to find out which devices are compatible. This is of the utmost importance, in order to have a fully functional wireless network, the devices you use must be compatible and must support the same protocols.
  • Online buyers guides (NexTag, Windows Marketplace, MySimon and Epinions) provide details on good buys and cost comparisons. You can purchase the devices through online vendors (CompUSA, Best Buy and Circuit City), or- if they are available- on EBay. Alternatively you can ask your ISP, if they sell the devices or lease them, this is a good option as ISPs are likely to provide compatible devices.
  • Even if you choose to buy the equipment online, it is a good idea to visit retail stores and get information on your purchase and the process of setting up the network. Also make sure that the devices are equipped with WEP(wired equivalent privacy) or better yet, WPA(Wi-Fi protected access) as wireless networks are prone to hacking and need such protection.
