How To Setup A MAC Filtering For A Network

nothing beats super fast wireless internet, however, wireless networks do pose some security risks. You can increase security over your home Wi-Fi network by setting up MAC.

  • The first step to setting up a MAC filter is to find out the MAC address for your computer. For Windows go to "Start," "Run" (on XP) or "Accessories," "Run" (on Vista). In the popup box, type; ‘ipconfig/all’ and  press enter. Your IP addresses will show up as Physical Address. For Mac OSX you do this by opening the System Preferences panel, choose "Network." Near "Show,"  select "Airport." Copy the Airport ID and paste it into a plain text file. Next  select "Ethernet" in the Show menu, and copy the Ethernet ID and paste it into your file.
  • Go to your routers configuration website. You might have to use your user name and key to gain access to the website.
  • Find the link for the MAC filter settings, it could be labeled as one of the following; "MAC Filtering", Connection Control, MAC Address Controls or Wireless Connection Control. Next enter the MAC addresses you found  into the spaces on the MAC Filtering Control page of your router's web page. Then enter or accept. Remember to save your settings.
  • Restart your system, and unplug your router and modem. When the computer fully restarts plug in the modem and when the lights are fully on plug in the router.
  • Do this to successfully set up your MAC filtering and you will be more secure and sure of your privacy. Title: How To Sign Up For Municipal Wi-Fi in Philadelphia
