Both the operating systems Windows 7 and Vista have a function by default in Disk Management utility to shrink and expand partitions. Whenever you have need of it
For using the Disk Management Utility open the Control Panel, and type ‘partition’ in the search box. You will immediately see the following link :
Shrink up a partition
In the disk Management screen, click on the partition that you have a need too shrink and select “Shrink Volume” from the menu. Then you will have to specify the amount of disk you want to shrink. For example, if you want to shrink your 100gb partition by roughly 20gb so that it will now be roughly 20gb, enter 20000 into the box:
Extend a Partition
Also what you can do is that on this screen, you can specifically set the amount of disk that you want to increase the partition by. In this case, if you want to take it back to 100gb than just type 100gb going to extend it back to the roughly 100GB size that it was before.
Note that the extend partition feature will only work with sufficient space in the disk.
Windows 7 has a built in tool named as “shrink” and ”expand” functions, for using this utility you need to have sufficient space in your disk. Otherwise the utility will not b able to perform its task of Extend storage function. If there is not free space clinging to the partition which you want to expand, A free partition magic is the best choice .A free partition master is free for windows home users. Download it and then run the setup to get the extension on the disk. It can be easily searched from the world wide web
