Setting up Gmail IMAP Support for Windows Vista Mail

In this article we shall discuss about how you would set up your Gmail support for Windows Vista Mail.

So here it is, go to Gmail’s account setting and go to tab Forwarding and POP/IMAP, now select the option “Enable IMAP”. Now go to Windows Mail  Tools  Accounts from the menu and click Add button. Now select E-mail account. Give your name in the next tab. Now enter your email address in the next window and obviously you would give your Gmail’s address.

Now choose IMAP from the drop-down menu and enter imap.gmail.com in Incoming server, enter smtp.gmail.com in Outgoing server and check the option “Outgoing server requires authentication”. Now move to next screen and give your Gmail address and password. On the next screen, check “Do no download my e-mail and folders at this time”, click Finish.

Go back to Internet Accounts dialog box and go to properties of your new account that you have just created. Go to Advanced tab and give the value for Outgoing mail (SMTP): 587, give value to Incoming mail (IMAP): 993 and check the box “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)”. Now move to IMAP tab and uncheck the box for “Store special folders on IMAP server”.

Now set some important settings so that Windows Mail doesn’t download everything, like removing check box from [Gmail], also from [Spam], and if you have a lot of mails you can uncheck [All Mail]. Now change all other folders to “Headers Only”. After all these settings, you can now check by click Send/Receive button to check everything works well.

Now set your account as you want. Check creating new folders / Labels, Deleting a Message from Gmail, Marking a Message as Spam in Gmail, using Conversation View, Starring a Message in Gmail.
